That is a broad question, but I will get down to specifics, I would like to have unlimited skills in general computer science. Since I was six, I’ve had an interest in computers. First, it was just a fleeting interest, but eventually it became something more. Nowadays, while I’ve gained many other interests, computers are still one of the primary hobbies I have. With AI, automation, and many other fields in computing on the rise, computers are becoming an important part of society. Those with computer skills are becoming important in solving social problems, now and in the future. For example, in healthcare, Big Data can be used to give a more accurate diagnosis, and for individuals biometric input from portable devices like smartwatches can help improve everyone’s health. I would use my newfound skills to help people, be it from working for a nonprofit or researching to push to boundaries of human knowledge.

A plight I see in our community is the situation of immigrants. Immigrants, especially from what people see as “less desirable” ethnicities are routinely discriminated in our society. Nowhere is this more evident as in San Diego. Being close to the border, many immigrants settle here. Coming here is not an easy feat in itself. Only 1500 immigrants from Latin America are allowed to seek refugee status annually and asylum seekers have to trek to long ways before they’re able to seek asylum. When they get here, it is a whole new set of challenges. When they arrive, they have no support network, no cash, limited English proficiency, nothing but the clothes on their backs and whatever limited support the government provides. They’re also systematically discriminated against. For example, an employer might hire someone worse at the job, but of the “right” skin color. Often times, the reason they’re discriminated against is the same reason that they left in the first place. Is it a good thing to say that the US discriminates in the same way that countries that regularly violate human rights do? This is a major issue which I hope is solved in the future.

A challenge that I persisted through was studying for my SAT exam (results come after application deadline). The SAT wasn’t something I was initially prepared to do, considering the skill level of its content, but with enough studying, I think I was able to get a good score. I was motivated by the fact if I got a good score, I would qualify for multiple programs where I could either take courses which would be more educationally stimulating than what they provide at my school and/or be eligible for scholarships to pay for those courses. I’ve always wanted to learn. I’ve self-taught myself many topics through youtube and linda.com which my school didn’t offer, from programming to history. Still, I see an advantage in class-based learning, though my school, doesn’t offer the courses I would prefer. For example, history has always fascinated me, and I’ve been able to learn much more than other people my age by just using online resources. But I rarely learn deeply about the intricate details about a historical event, because online intricate info about certain events is often lacking.

Personal strength of mine I believe I could use to help others is my skill in computing. Computers can do amazing things, from flying an airplane to beating a grandmaster at Chess and Go. The technology behind computers is also getting better by the day, with new advances in fields like AI and big data happening around the clock. I believe that, within a few decades, automation, AI, and other technologies will further permeate our society causing many potentially good and bad effects. For example, new developments in computing might be able to create robots able to save people trapped in a collapsed building. On the other hand, it could displace millions of workers, causing unemployment en masse. While some of these changes might seem bad, I believe they can be used for a good, more idealistic society. With my skill and passion for computing, I believe I could help develop these technologies, and possibly tame the more volatile ones.

If I had an opportunity to plan an educational trip, I would go to China. My mother was born there and I have many relatives still living there. I would plan my trip to gain new experiences in my two favorite subjects: Computer Science and history. China has a vast cultural history, from famous poets like Li Bai and Du Fu to important emperors like Emperor Taizong of Tang or Emperor Wu of Han. China also has a large medicinal history, with scientists able to extract compounds from traditional cures to treat diseases. Along with that, China also has great educational opportunities, and if I finish learning Mandarin I would happily consider Chinese colleges for my degree. In terms of modern significance, China is a land of high-tech.

If I went, first I would visit a major technological hub of China, Shanghai. There, I would visit the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. The museum has many sites of interest, from fascinating exhibits on robotics to beautiful displays of nature. After that journey, I would visit the 3D printing Cultural Museum, also in Shanghai. Part art, part science, the 3D printing museum has many fascinating displays. I would be able to see art created with 3D printing technology, along with the history and science behind those technologies. Next, I would visit the Jade Buddha Temple. The Jade Buddha Temple is a functioning Buddhist temple home to many cultural relics. I’ve always respected other cultures and religions and I would be happy to learn more about them.

After my tour of Shanghai, I would visit Guangzhou, my mother’s hometown. I would first, of course, visit my relatives living there. I would then visit the Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King. This museum has many artifacts from thousands of years ago. I would be interested in seeing the culture of my ancestors and what an important king from 2000 years ago would have had. I would hop over to Hong Kong for my next visit. In Hong Kong, I would visit would be the University of Hong Kong. The University of Hong Kong is a great university, and I would like to visit to see if it would be a potential place to attend when I’m older.

I would spend my final leg of my trip in Beijing. The first places I would visit is the Peking and Tsinghua universities. Like the University of Hong Kong, those two universities are wonderful institutions that I would be happy to attend when I’m older. The next place I would visit is the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City was the imperial palace for hundreds of years in China and now houses a museum. Because of this, it has a long history and influenced many cultural and architectural elements of East Asia. I would want to go to learn more about the history of Imperial China and look at the museum’s collection of art from that era.
